JANESVILLE - The Monroe girls tennis team left no doubt they were in an elite class Thursday, rolling to the championship of the Janesville Craig Invitational.

The Cheesemakers dominated Janesville Craig 7-0 in the championship round.

The Cheesemakers swept all three matches en route to the title, including a 4-3 victory over Fort Atkinson, a new member of the Badger South Conference, and a 5-2 win over Janesville Parker.

"I was completely satisfied," Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said. "After the match, I had zero regrets."

The three Cheesemakers' doubles teams went a combined 8-1.

The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Pam Lehman and Melissa Hill stayed undefeated and continued its flair for the dramatic winning a pair of three-set matches. Lehman and Hill defeated Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken in the championship, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 10-5.

Monroe juniors Ashley Hermanson and Gwen Sutter also remained unbeaten at No. 2 doubles. It was anything but a cakewalk, though, as Hermanson and Sutter won two tiebreakers, including a first-set tiebreaker in the championship to propel them to a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Olivia Ehlers and Emily Reshaw.

The Cheesemakers' Taylor Weis and Kelsey Erickson at No. 3 doubles went 2-1 and capped their day by defeating Maggie Bolton and Emma Bitter, 6-2, 6-4.

"I was surprised at how much we won the championship match by," Miller said. "I knew there would be some competition there."

Monroe sophomore Kristin McArdle defeated Janesville Craig's Niki Westenberger, 6-1, 6-3 in the championship round.

McArdle, who went 2-1 on the day, lost her only match to Fort Atkinson's Leah Dahl, a state qualifier the past two years.

Monroe's Kiera Berger remained unbeaten this year, going 3-0 at Janesville, including a three-set win against Janesville Parker at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 2-6, 13-11. Berger won her title match at No. 4 singles over Laudan Rezai, 6-2, 6-1.

McKenzie Bruce secured a win in the championship match at No. 3 singles over Nicole Timblin, 6-1, 6-2.

Monroe freshman Ellie Shuda also went 2-1, winning the championship round by defeating Nicole Gutzman, 7-5, 6-2.

"The girls did a wonderful job of playing with much intensity and aggression," Miller said.

Monroe will host the Cheesemakers Doubles tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday on all of the courts in the city.
