ELKHORN - The Monroe girls tennis team will enter Badger South Conference play on a roll after winning the Elkhorn triple dual Saturday.

All four of the Cheesemakers' doubles teams went 3-0 to win titles at their flights.

Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said it's nice to win three matches before the main conference dual competitions.

"It has given us a confidence boost," Miller said. "These matches were important for seeding purposes for the sectional tournament. The girls did what they had to."

In their closest team match Saturday, the Cheesemakers pulled out a 5-3 win over Elkhorn. The Cheesemakers (11-2) beat both Milton and Watertown, 7-1.

The Cheesemakers' top three doubles teams now have a combined record of 43-4.

"Because they have won so much, they have to go out and expect to win and they have done that," Miller said.

At No. 1 doubles, seniors Pam Lehman and Melissa Hill (14-2) defeated Milton's Irene Baumann and Kim Hanson in three sets, 6-0, 5-7, 10-5. Lehman and Hill also won key tiebreakers against Milton and Watertown.

"Our No. 1 doubles is in a tough position because they are most vulnerable at the top of the lineup," Miller said.

Monroe juniors Ashley Hermanson and Gwen Sutter at No. 2 doubles won the championship at their flight and improved to 15-1.

Hermanson and Sutter pulled out a three-set match against Watertown's Lydia Free and Allie Leyrer, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6

At No. 3 doubles, Taylor Weis and Kelsey Erickson (14-1) won the title at their flight.

Weis and Erickson won a key second-set tiebreaker over Elkhorn's Amber Bushey and Nicole Riese, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

The Elkhorn triple dual included a No. 4 doubles flight and Kasey Duffy and Emily Grossen captured the championship.

Duffy and Grossen also won a three-set match against Milton's Brooke Fearon and Erin Carr, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. Duffy and Grossen also won a critical tiebreaker against Watertown.

Monroe sophomore Kristin McArdle (8-5) went 1-2 on the day at No. 1 singles. Freshman Ellie Shuda (8-5) at No. 2 singles went 2-1 to finish second place.

Monroe junior Kiera Berger (11-2), playing at No. 3 singles, took second after going 2-1.

Miranda Henke at No. 4 singles also took second place, finishing 2-1 with her first varsity wins.

The Cheesemakers will play a postponed match at 4:30 p.m. today against Monona Grove at Recreation Park to make up for a Sept. 4 rainout.
