JANESVILLE - The Monroe Cheesemakers swim team finished in fourth place at the Parker Invitational, Saturday, taking medals in eight of the 10 events.
"The girls saw another step towards their goal," Monroe head coach Linda Moser said. "Last year we placed sixth among nine teams."
Monroe picked up its momentum after taking first in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team, consisting of Kendell Niffenegger, Randi Robertson, Cat Weeden and Rachel Root, won with a time of 9 minutes, .80 seconds.
"The team was elated when the 800 free relay team pulled in a first (place). It was so awesome to watch all of the girls explode with excitement when they realized what the relay had done," Moser said. "That excitement just flowed through all the relays for the rest of the meet. I am so proud of all of them and the encouragement they gave each other."
Monroe 500-yard crescendo relay team of Sara Heitkamp, Leanna Schwartzlow, Niffenegger and Robertson finished second with a time of 5:19.50.
The Cheesemakers' 300 breaststroke relay, 200 medley relay, and 300 butterfly relay teams each took fourth. The 400-yard individual medley relay team took fifth and the 400 medley relay and 300 backstroke relay finished sixth.
"The strategy for this meet, as well as Tuesday (Aug. 25,) was to see what we have - to collect lots of 50 splits on the girls swimming many different strokes and to go from there to build our season," Moser said.
Baraboo won the meet, collecting 123 points. Milton finished second with 118 points, Fort Atkinson (115) third, followed by Monroe (101), Janesville Craig (98), Badger-Big Foot-Williams Bay (88), Beloit Memorial (63), Madison LaFollette (62), Janesville Parker (61), and Delavan-Darien (51).
