A strong start for Monroe soccer

WISCONSIN DELLS - The offensive fireworks started early for the Monroe boys soccer team.

The Cheesemakers exploded for six first-half goals en route to an 8-0 win over Wisconsin Dells in their season opener Tuesday.

"I have really been expecting that against this team," Monroe coach Tony Stamm said of the offensive breakout against a Chiefs' program that is younger than the Cheesemakers'.

Monroe junior Michael Gross led the Cheesemakers, scoring two goals and adding three assists.

"He (Gross) always makes goals happen," Stamm said. "Usually, he is always the helper. It was good to have him score tonight."

Gross wasn't the only playmaker, as junior Andrew Aurit and senior Brandon Wilson each scored two goals.

Aurit notched the season's first goal just 34 seconds into the game on an assist by Gross.

Wilson scored eight minutes into the game on an assist by junior Jon Elmer. Gross scored the first of his two goals in the 16th minute on an assist from Aurit to give the Cheesemakers a 3-0 lead.

Monroe sophomore Kelmend Isaj added a goal off an assist by Dylan Blum to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 4-0 lead.

In the final seven minutes before the half, Wilson and Aurit each scored off Gross assists.

Monroe junior Patrick Gellings scored 17 minutes into the second half.

The Cheesemakers will host Sauk Prairie at 5 p.m. Thursday at Honey Creek Park. The Eagles have won three straight Division 1 WIAA regional tournament titles and finished second in the Badger North Conference behind Waunakee last year.

"It will be a really good test for us," Stamm said. "Last year they took advantage of us. We are looking forward to playing them."
