VERONA - The Monroe wrestling team had three wrestlers go unbeaten at the Verona dual tournament Saturday -Gavin Wels at 112 pounds, junior Dillon Weckerly (171) and senior Michael Ingold (189).
In one of the biggest matches of the day, Wels won a 9-5 decision over Kenosha Tremper's Dominic Garcia, who is ranked fifth in the state in Division 1.
Monroe went 3-2 in the dual tournament. The Cheesemakers defeated Verona 41-40, Madison Memorial 58-6 and an All-Star lineup of wrestling reserves, 55-6, since Wilmot Union didn't attend the tournament due to weather conditions.
Despite only having 10 of the 14 weight classes filled, the Cheesemakers lost close matches to Kenosha Tremper 37-21 and Viroqua 36-28.
"It is just hard to win when we are in a hole before every match even starts," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "We do remarkably well given that we give up 24 points before it starts."
The Cheesemakers lost by 16 to Tremper, but gave up 24 points in forefits and gave up 18 points in forefits to Viroqua.
Monroe junior Cory Kundert at 215 and senior Lucas Leu at heavyweight both went 4-1.
"It is frustrating, but it is what it is and I need to give a lot of credit to the kids for going out there and giving it all they have each and every time, knowing what they are up against," Jackson said.
Monroe will host Madison Edgewood-Monona Grove at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and it marks the last home dual match for the senior wrestlers.
