Madison—The Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDA) recently presented State Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) with the organization’s 2022 “Champion of Economic Development” legislative award for his leadership on legislative initiatives to drive economic growth and prosperity in Wisconsin. The award was presented at L&M Corrugated Container Corp. in Platteville.

“There is no question Senator Marklein is a true “Champion of Economic Development”, as his leadership on key issues has resulted in real results that are moving Wisconsin’s economy forward,” said Michael Welsh, WEDA V.P. of Legislative Affairs. “From rural broadband expansion to talent attraction and workforce development initiatives, his efforts in the State Capitol during the 2021-22 legislative session are helping to address Wisconsin’s top economic challenges.”

The “Champion of Economic Development” award is presented at the end of each legislative session to state lawmakers who demonstrate extraordinary support for important economic development policies. This year WEDA is presenting the award to 20 state lawmakers who exhibited an exceptional commitment to growing Wisconsin’s economy based on several factors, including voting record, sponsorship of legislation, and responsiveness to critical economic development issues.

Sen. Marklein earned the “Champion of Economic Development” designation for his important work on a wide range of legislation aimed at boosting the state’s economy, including talent attraction funding, extensive investment in rural broadband expansion, historic income tax cuts, and preservation of the Manufacturing and Agriculture Tax Credit.

Marklein, who was first elected to the Wisconsin Senate in 2014 after serving two terms in the Assembly, represents the 17th Senate District, which stretches from Grant County in the southwest corner of the state up to Juneau County in central Wisconsin. He serves as the Co-Chair of the Legislature’s powerful Joint Finance Committee.
