Monroe Parks and Rec to hold 4th of July event Saturday

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation 4th of July Celebration will be held all day Saturday at Twining Park.

The City of Monroe fireworks will begin around 9:30 p.m. and will include the Wisconsin Bank and Trust Sky Concert. To ensure the safety of the people in the park and to avoid distraction during the display, vehicles will not be able to drive through the park during the fireworks.

All day coed volleyball and slowpitch tournaments will be held at the park. Entertainment at the Bandshell includes the Tot Lot Singers at 10 a.m. and the City Band Concert from 8 to 9 p.m.

Several children's activities will be held in the park from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children's games include Go Fish, sponsored by Sons of Norway; Let's Go Fishing, sponsored by Monroe Lion's Club; Touchdown Pass, sponsored by Monroe Clinic; Super Heroes Can Toss, sponsored by Orchid International; Frozen, sponsored by Woodford State Bank; Face Painting and Tattoos, sponsored by Colony Brands; Pretty Princess Toss, sponsored by Colony Brands; Wheel of Misfortune, sponsored by Monroe Morning Optimist; Doc McStuffins Pick-a-Sucker, sponsored by Monroe Morning Optimist; Patriotic Pitch, sponsored by VFW Auxiliary and VFW Post 2312; Kerplunk, sponsored by Knights of Columbus; Moon Walk, sponsored by Crossroads Church; Finding Nemo, sponsored by Culver's of Monroe and Culver's of New Glarus; Hole in One, sponsored by Monsignor Campion's Charitable Fund; Pirates Ring Toss, sponsored by Kiwanis Club; and Noodle Toss, sponsored by American Legion Zilmer-Riley Post 84 and American Legion Auxiliary Zilmer-Riley Unit 84.

The Monroe Lion's Club is sponsoring a petting zoo which will be held across from the jet at Twining Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rides will be taken around the park by horse and wagon driven by Leo Woolever from 1 to 4 p.m. Horse and wagon rides, sponsored by the Monroe Kiwanis, will start in the parking lot nearest to the Bandshell.

The Monroe Parks and Recreation Lassie League, girls entering second grade, will play at 11:30 a.m. and Minor League, boys entering second grade, will play at noon at the Twining west and east ball diamonds.

The Monroe High School girls soccer Team will host a 4th of July Soccer Tournament that is open to kids entering kindergarten through adults. It will be at the Monroe YMCA Soccer Fields, 1307 2nd St. Each team is guaranteed at least two games in a round-robin format. Cost is $12 per player and includes a participation awards t-shirt. Divisions are: 4-by-4 for kindergarten through fifth grade, 5-by-5 for U-12 and U-14, and 6-by-6 for U16, U18 and adults. Proceeds benefit the Monroe High School soccer team. Concessions stands will be located in the park, including the Park and Rec food stand located at the south shelter. It will feature pizza and breadsticks from Vince's, lemonade, water, Gatorade, soda, nachos and Schwan's ice cream products. Koning's Ribeye Grill will be selling ribeye and pulled barbecue pork sandwiches, hamburgers and potato salad near the Bruni Shelter. Knights of Columbus will have hot dogs, brats, cotton candy, Sno-cones and popcorn. The National Historic Cheesemaking Center will feature crÃ-me puffs and grilled cheese sandwiches, and Frank's Chicago style hot dogs and Italian beef.

To make a food donation to the Parks and Recreation food stand, drop off at the Parks and Rec office by Thursday or the Twining south shelter on Saturday. A few bags of Tostitos chips, cases of bottled water or Gatorade in the 20-ounce bottles, and frozen strawberries are still needed

All volunteers receive a t-shirt, sponsored by Wisconsin Bank and Trust, AFSCME Local Union 3760, Badger State Ethanol, Colony Brands, Coplien Painting, Fuzzy's Audio and Video Co., Koning's Ribeye Grill, Knights of Columbus, Krueger Pyrotechnics and Fireworks Displays, Lanz and McArdle Insurance, Monroe Engraving, National Historic Cheesemaking Center, Precision Drive and Control, Rural Insurance Company - Mike Hutchinson, RBS Activewear/Thunder Bridge Trading, Schultz Inter-State Ag, Vince's Restaurant and Pizzeria, Whitney Tree Service, Johnny B Enterprises, MAST, Monroe Morning Optimists, Kiwanis, Monroe Lion's Club, Grede, Frank's Franks, Crossroads Church, and Cliff and Dorothy Reasa Charitable Foundation of Monroe Fund.

The fireworks production will be presented by Krueger Pyrotechnics and Firework Displays and Johnny B Enterprises and will start around 9:30 p.m. and go until 9:45 p.m. The proceeds from the 4th of July celebration will be used to make park improvements.
