MONROE - Under the direction of artistic director Michael Ross, the Madison Youth Choirs' Ragazzi and Cantabile choirs will perform their spring program at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St., Monroe.
More than 75 choir members will be accompanied by pianist Jess Salek and will perform new pieces and past favorites by both American and European composers.
MYC was formed in July 2003 through a merger of the Madison Boychoir and Madison Children's Choir. This choir has an international reputation and collaborates with professional arts organizations including the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Madison Ballet and Madison Opera, while continually supporting and recognizing the work of public schools and music educators throughout the area.
Their mission is to inspire enjoyment, enhance education and nurture personal, musical and social development by the study and performance of high-quality and diverse choral literature.
The oldest youth choir organization in Wisconsin, MYC welcomes singers of all ability levels, challenging them to learn more than just notes and rhythms. The singers explore the history, context and heart of the music, using music as a lens to discover the world. MYC serves more than 500 young people, ages 7 to 18, in 11 single-gender choirs.
In addition to a public concert series, MYC conducts an annual spring tour of schools and retirement centers, performing for more than 7,000 students and senior citizens annually. In summer 2014, the boy choirs traveled to Scotland for their first appearance at the invitation-only Aberdeen International Youth Festival.
General admission tickets for the Madison Youth Choirs concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students 18 years old and younger. Members of the Monroe Arts Center can attend this concert for free. Tickets can be purchased in person at the box office located at 1315 11th St., Monroe, by calling the Monroe Arts Center at 608-325-5700 or 888-596-1249, or online at www.monroeartscenter.com.
