Thomas C. Runkle Jr, age 94, of Monroe, died on Saturday, December 24, 2016 in Monroe. He was born on June 24, 1922 in Sylvester Township, the son of Thomas and Lena Runkle. He attended Albany Schools.
Thomas and Lucille Kubly were united in marriage on August 11, 1946 at Zwingli Evangelical and Reformed Church in Monticello.
Thomas served in the U.S. Army, serving in the Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment Army, in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland Germany, and Luzon. He earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal and the good Conduct Medal.
Thomas was a truck driver for Gateway Transportation, Inc.
He was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ, Zwingli Church of Brotherhood, American Legion Marty Post #256 in Monticello, Cecil Jones VFW Post # 2312.
He is survived by his sons, Terry (Carol) Runkle of Knoxville, TN, Richard (Lori) Runkle of Monroe; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his wife, Lucille, sister, Elsie King, and brother, Fred Runkle.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at SHRINER-HAGER-GOHLKE FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Military honors will take place immediately following, in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 28th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
