Margaret I. Benkert, age 88, of Monroe, died on July 19, 2010 at her home. She was born on April 2, 1922, the daughter of Benjamin and Walburga (Michlig) Meichtry. Margaret and Josef "Joe" Benkert were married on October 9, 1943 in Galveston, TX, during WWII. Margaret enjoyed playing cards and was an avid reader.

She was a member of St. Victor Catholic Church, Life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are her children, John (Kimberly) Benkert of Glen Ellyn, IL, Jan (George) Hancock of Mercer Island, WA, Kate (Harriet Ammann) Benkert of Olympia, WA, Joey (Randy) Schneeberger of Monroe; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters, Elsie Nussbaum, Olga Preston, Therese (Eugene) Snyder and Mary Ann Blum. She is predeceased by her husband, Joe; brother, Theodore Meichtry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at St. Victor Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Fr. Michael E. Klarer, with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. A visitation will be held on Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home. A memorial fund is being established in Margaret's memory.
