Gordon Thomas "Gordie" Canon, age 64, of Argyle, WI, passed away as the result of cancer Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born December 20, 1945, in Dodgeville, WI, the son of Eleanor Canon. Gordie was raised by his grandparents: Guy and Ethel Canon. He attended Mineral Point Schools. Gordie was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Berget on April 19, 1964, at Lamont United Methodist Church in Lamont, WI. He did auto body repair work for most of his life. He was self-employed and was the owner of Argyle Auto Body for several years; prior to that he worked at auto body repair shops in Monroe, WI.
Gordie was one of the original founders and was an honorary member of Yellowstone Flint and Cap. He and Shirley along with Wisconsin friends attended several rendezvous including Glacier Park in Montana and Thunder Bay, Canada. They met treasured friends, Joe and Jan Hagdu and their sons: Jessie and Jeffrey, on their first rendezvous at Old Fort William in Thunder Bay and always remained close to them. Joe introduced Gordie to Walleye fishing in Canada and every spring they went fishing together. He would invite relatives and friends to attend these fishing adventures. Gordie especially enjoyed having his son and grandchildren with him. He also treasured the moments spent with his friends at Irma's Kitchen having coffee.
Gordie had many talents. He enjoyed building, engraving and checkering black powder guns. He was also a gifted carpenter building and remodeling on their home in Argyle. Gordie would put his heart and soul in whatever he would do. He was especially proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Gordie is survived by his wife of 45 years: Shirley Jean at home; one son: Scott (Heather) Canon of rural Blanchardville, WI; two daughters: Penny (Tony) Monahan of Argyle and Wendy (Mike Barker) Canon of New Glarus, WI; 12 grandchildren: Courtney Mazur of Iowa, Kasey (Kyle) Bruehlman of Jacksonville, NC, Brittany Canon of La Crosse, WI, Mikayhla, Nathalie, and Whitney Canon of rural Blanchardville, Trevor, Shane and Alysha Monahan all of Argyle, Emily and Sawyer Kammerud and Kylo Barker all of New Glarus; one great-grandson: Levi Canon Paust of Blanchardville; his step-father: Donald Peebles of East Dubuque, IL; and one half-brother: Tom (Brenda) Negus of Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his mother: Eleanor Peebles; his grandparents: Guy and Ethel Canon; his aunt: Loretta Mau; and his mother and father-in-law: Earl and Leona Berget.
Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Cornerstone Lutheran Church, 1540 Old Highway 81, Argyle, WI, with Rev. Ron Brubakken officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in rural Argyle. A visitation will be held Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 1 p.m. until the time of services at the church.
