Dr. Richard E. "Doc" Hunter, MD, age 85, of rural Argyle, WI, passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born October 12, 1927 in Platteville, WI, the son of George and Gertrude "Gertie" (Edmonds) Hunter. Doc grew up in Cuba City, WI, where he graduated from high school in 1945. Following his graduation from high school Doc entered into the United States Army in 1946, where he was a medic in Vienna, Austria. He was honorably discharged in 1948. Doc was united in marriage to Audrey Ash on June 22, 1952 in Alden, MN. He received his Medical Degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1953 and completed his internship at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, IL. Doc began his medical practice in Argyle in 1954, where he treated patients in the surrounding area for 40 years prior to providing services in Blanchardville, WI. He was a member of both the Green and Lafayette County medical societies. Doc retired in 2010.
Doc is survived by his wife: Audrey at home; two daughters: Georgia (Manny Reynaldo) Hunter of Boca Raton, FL, and Valerie (Bill) Kolb of Mount Horeb, WI; three grandchildren: Aaron Kolb, Adrienne (Rich) Hull, and Alexandra Reynaldo; and three great-grandchildren: Olivia, Haylee, and Elsbeth. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Doc was a past member of Argyle United Methodist Church, American Medical Association, and Wisconsin Medical Association. He was an avid gardener and landscaper and enjoyed painting in oils. Doc was also very fond of music. He could do anything he put his mind to. Doc learned to play the banjo, guitar and harmonica. He loved his cat of 16 years, Shmootoot. Doc will be remembered for his great sense of humor and for giving a nickname to just about everyone he knew. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date with military rites accorded by Argyle American Legion Post #251. A public visitation will be held Thursday, July 11, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home, 801 E. Milwaukee St. in Argyle.
