GREEN COUNTY FELONIES
A warrant for the arrest of David J. Peschl, 44, Madison, was filed Dec. 21 on three Class I felony counts of failing to make child support payments from June 2014 until December. Peschl was required to make weekly child support payments of $91.25. Because of his failure to do so, Peschl faces a maximum possible sentence of 4.5 years in prison.
Trenten Eugene Davis, 27, Brodhead, was charged Dec. 22 with a Class I felony count of fleeing an officer in a vehicle and a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer. On Nov. 24, Davis reported his vehicle stolen - it had, he claimed, been taken from his Brodhead residence the previous night. However, security footage from a neighbor's residence showed the vehicle being driven away by people from Davis' house. Davis' phone records also contradicted his claim that he had spent the previous night at a friend's house in Orfordville: cell phone data demonstrated that Davis had traveled throughout Green County during the night. It eventually transpired that Davis had fled from a traffic stop (for erratic driving) in Brodhead, leading police on a lengthy pursuit before eventually eluding them by driving through a field the night of Nov. 23. The next day, Davis claimed the car had been stolen to deflect suspicion from himself. Davis' preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 26. His maximum possible sentence is 1.5 years in prison.
A warrant for the arrest of William James Buford, 38, New Glarus, was filed Dec. 22 on a Class H felony count of theft through false representation, and seven misdemeanor counts of unemployment fraud. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development had discovered that Buford had claimed unemployment benefits from Feb. 10 until Aug. 19 of this year, despite actually being employed during that period. Buford was ordered to repay the nearly $10,000 he fraudulently obtained; however, criminal charges were filed after Buford defaulted on his payments. The maximum possible sentence Buford faces is three years in prison.
Timothy Joseph Schwarz, 31, Brodhead, was charged Dec. 27 with a Class G felony count of intimidating a victim, a Class H felony count of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. Schwarz was charged after an incident on Sept. 3, when he prevented a woman from leaving a residence during a verbal altercation. After she attempted and failed to escape, the woman attempted to call the police, but was thwarted again when Schwarz seized her phone. The woman said Schwarz is frequently verbally abusive and has threatened in the past to kill people she is close to. Schwarz's initial appearance is scheduled for Jan. 30. His maximum possible sentence is eight years in prison.
A warrant for the arrest of Charles N. Burton, 46, New Glarus, was filed Dec. 28 for a Class H felony count of threatening a police officer and a misdemeanor count of making threats over a telephone. Burton was charged after he was discovered outside a woman's residence in his vehicle making phone calls to the woman. He later said he "just wanted to make sure she came home safe," according to police reports, although he had a firearm in the vehicle and was intoxicated. The next day, when officers approached his residence to inform him that he was not allowed to drive, Burton became enraged and threatened to shoot the officers if they remained on his property. The maximum possible sentence for his charges is three years in prison.
