ALBANY - As gas prices continue to rise more people might be staying close to home rather than take a long vacation.

Green County villages and cites offer a wide variety of activities, places to visit and places to eat - all within a short distance.

Albany is one such community.

Albany, known as the "Pearl of the Sugar River," is a friendly place for people who want to experience small-town activities and fun.

Places to see and things to do include:

• The Albany Historical Museum on Water Street. The museum houses collections of toys, farm implements, military memorabilia, cameras, railroad history and ostrich-feathered hats.

Family obituaries are on file for people who want to research their family genealogy.

The historical society also sponsors the Old Fashioned Hymn sing at the restored 1856 Gap Church just west of the village on Wisconsin 59.

• A scenic downtown dam draws photographers and fishermen. People can tube, canoe or kayak the Sugar River. Bald eagles nest in tall trees near the river bank.

• Yesteryear Days Festival, held Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26. It offers music, fun and a parade. People can take part in Rueben's Run.

• The annual Fall Festival will be held Oct. 4 downtown.

Throughout the summer, people can also take canoe rides or inner tube rides on the Sugar River.
