Boy Scouts and adult leaders from Monroe troops helped remove trash and garbage that accumulated over the past year. The group found a phone, a hubcap, plastic bottles and other garbage in the creek and along its sides. Last year they collected 70 bags of trash.
MONROE - It's surprising what gets tossed into Honey Creek throughout the year.

Scouts from Monroe Boy Scouts Troops 101, 180 and 115, and adult leaders picked up trash from the creek for four hours Saturday. About 35 people helped clean up the creek.

Ben Latimer, 11, found some wire wrapped around a stick and he also found a $1 bill. Paul Skelton found some water softener bags. Other Scouts found a bike tire and an adult volunteer found a phone.

The Scouts weren't sure if it was more fun to clean up the creek or to walk through the mud to look for interesting things people threw away.

Michael Rohloff, 11, was able to trade the hubcap he found in the creek for a like-new baseball another Scout found.

This was the 13th year Scouts and adult leaders walked along the creek to pick up garbage. They covered the five miles of the creek that runs through Monroe.

Jerry Ellefson, who helps organize the annual cleanup, said Scouts collected 70 bags of trash, four bags of plastic bottles, two bags of Styrofoam and 10 feet of yard border trim from the creek in 2008.

Jeff Everson, Troop 180 Scoutmaster, said scouts found a cow's head in the creek one year and in other years they have found strollers, roller skates and a treadmill.
