SPRING VALLEY TOWNSHIP - A 32-year-old Brodhead man was killed after the van he was driving collided with a semi tractor Wednesday night on Wisconsin 81, according to the Rock County Sheriff's Department.
Justin L. Condon died after the 2001 Oldsmobile van he was driving collided with a semi tractor driven by Jeffrey B. Smith, 44, Rockford. Rock County Coroner Michelle Walworth pronounced Condon dead at the scene.
The accident, which occurred on South Avon Store Road about five miles southeast of Brodhead, was reported to the Rock County Sheriff's at about 9:06 p.m.
A preliminary investigation showed Condon was traveling east when Smith noticed Condon's van entering his lane, according to a news release from the sheriff's department. Smith steered his semi tractor to the left in an attempt to avoid the crash, and Condon turned back into the eastbound lane resulting in a near head-on collision. Condon was wearing his seatbelt.
Smith was also wearing his seatbelt. He was transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and released.
Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff's department release.
The Green County Sheriff's Department and Brodhead and Orfordville fire departments and EMS units also responded to the crash.
