DODGEVILLE - In celebration of National Homeownership Month, Southwestern Wisconsin Community Action Program was named a recipient of the 2014 USDA Rural Development Valued Partner in Housing Award.

The award recognizes organizations that demonstrate exceptional dedication and success in providing safe and affordable housing in rural Wisconsin.

In the past two years, SWCAP provided down payment assistance to multiple home buyers, totaling more than $100,000, in addition to the work they do to help rural homeowners with weatherization and home-repair needs.

Community Action Agencies were created through the "War on Poverty" Legislation passed in the 1960. SWCAP was incorporated in 1966 in Dodgeville, as a private nonprofit organization and is governed by a 24-volunteer member board of directors.

SWCAP focuses on serving low-income families in Iowa, Grant, Richland, Green and Lafayette counties in southwestern Wisconsin.
