RACINE - Sister Rose Stietz, OP, (formerly Sister Gretchen) grew up near Gratiot and Monroe and is celebrating her 50th jubilee as a Racine Dominican Sister. She received a bachelor's degree from Dominican College, Racine, and a master's degree from Wayne State University, Detroit. After teaching for 14 years, Sister Rose attended Blackhawk Technical College in Monroe, before becoming active in community organizing, Christian service and neighborhood outreach. She now ministers in Milwaukee neighborhoods. Among other efforts, she coordinates prayer vigils at the sites of most homicides in Milwaukee.
A special celebration at which the Dominican community will honor Sister Rose, along with 18 other jubilarians, will be held this summer at Siena Center, home of the community in Racine.
The Sisters have a 146 year history of serving in Wisconsin. They are a religious community of sisters and lay associates who live by the mission "committed to truth, compelled to justice."
