MONROE — In 2018, the newly formed Green County MultiCultural Outreach Program (MCOP) organized the first Family Posada Celebration at the YMCA. They wanted to bring the community together and celebrate a popular celebration of Mexico and Central America.
In Latin America and parts of the United States, the Las Posadas holiday is celebrated from Dec. 16-24 to commemorate Mary and Joseph’s search for “posada” or an inn. Each evening, children and adults walk from house to house in the neighborhood, asking for lodging. After the procession, Mass is held, and the children break piñatas filled with treats.
MCOP designated the Green County Family Posada Celebration a non-religious Latinx-themed holiday celebration to welcome our new neighbors and bring the community together.
This is the fourth Posada Celebration at the YMCA. It was celebrated in 2018, 2019 and 2022.
The event is sponsored by the Green County Family YMCA and the Multicultural Outreach Program (MCOP) of Green County.
Jocelyn Reyes, a bilingual intern with the YMCA through the Monroe High School Youth Apprenticeship Program, is spearheading the planning of this event in collaboration with MCOP.
MCOP is a local organization whose mission is “to welcome and celebrate diverse community members, advocate for inclusivity, and educate the community about the value of diversity.”
The Posada event is more than just a gathering; it’s an opportunity to embrace the warmth of the season and the joy of community.
Guests are encouraged to bring family and friends.
WHAT IS the MultiCultural Outreach Program (MCOP)?
A local grass-roots organization, MCOP is an official program of SWCAP (Southwestern Wisconsin Community Action Program). Volunteers meet monthly to plan and implement initiatives based on celebrations, outreach, education, and cultural awareness.
Private donations and grants from United Way of Green County, Colony Brands, the Monroe Morning Optimists, and other sources fund MCOP.
