MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is now taking registration for Karate, My Furry Friends No School Day Program and Ballroom Dance Lessons. Registration can be made by visiting the Parks & Recreation office at 1110 18th Ave., Monroe, between Monday and Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Karate
The Karate class is based primarily on tae kwon do, with contributions from judo, boxing & other martial art. It covers the full scope of martial arts including stretching, forms, self-defense and sparring techniques. Participants can expect to obtain increased flexibility, increased self-confidence, self-discipline and overall physical conditioning.
The continuous program meets at the Senior Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Youth age 7 to 12 meet from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., and those age 13 and up meet from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. New students and white belts should attend the first week.
The cost is $40 for residents and $50 for non-residents. The next session of karate will be from Feb. 28 to May 24.
My Furry Friends & Thank You to Loki
Come and find your special animal to love and fill with stuffing. Choose from dogs, monkeys, horses, bears, bunnies and pigs. Games and snacks will follow. The program, which is for 4- to 12-year-olds, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, March 16, at the Community Center. Cost is $12 for residents and $16 for non-residents. Loki will be there at 2:30 p.m.
Ballroom Dance Lessons
Participants may now sign up for Spring Ballroom Dance Lessons, which will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays beginning on April 9th and running until April 30, at the Monroe Behring Senior Center. Class instruction will include the fox trot, waltz, swing, polka and the schottische. The class is limited to 12 couples and fills quickly. You will need a partner to sign up. If you are interested in participating but do not have a partner, contact the Parks and Rec office at (608) 329-2460 to find a partner. The cost is $48 per couple for residents and $68 per couple for non-residents.
