FREEPORT — Freeport Art Museum, Northwest Illinois Audubon Society, Audubon Great Lakes and the Boys and Girls Club of Stephenson County will be hosting a Zoom event — A Conversation with Christian Cooper: Celebrating the Diversity in Birds and People at 6:30 p.m. June 16.
Christian Cooper is a writer and board member of New York City Audubon. After a video of a racist confrontation while he was birding in Central Park went viral, he drew on that experience to author the Black Lives Matter comic “It’s a Bird” for DC Comics. That continued his decades-long activism on behalf of racial justice, LGBTQ equality, and expanding democratic access in American Society.
Christian Cooper has graciously accepted an invitation to visit Freeport and share his enthusiasm for birding with the young people at the Boys and Girls Club and the community. During his visit, there will be a donation of binoculars to the Club.
Mr. Cooper will speak from his experience in promoting social justice and anti-racism as part of a critical conversation concerning equity and inclusion throughout the United States at the Boys and Girls Club and to a Zoom audience. On June 17, he will also meet with individuals for a birding walk and talk at Taylor Park.
