MONTICELLO - A committee made up of members from the Amstutz-Marty American Legion Post No. 256 and the Monticello Community Club is working on raising funds for a local Monticello veteran's memorial designed to honor Monticello-area veterans of all wars.

The estimated cost of the memorial is $60,000, which does not include landscaping or the pavers. The total pledged at this time is $30,000 including $15,000 given by the Monticello community and $5,000 from the Amstutz-Marty American Legion Post. The organizations are hoping to start this project in the spring with completion anticipated by Veteran's Day in November.

The Veteran's Memorial will be built in Montesian Gardens, west of the gazebo, on land owned by the Bank of Monticello. The memorial will complement the garden, which throughout the year draws many out of state and local visitors.

Pechman Memorials was selected to create the granite monument that will be in five sections: WWI Veterans, WWII Veterans, Veterans of all Wars and Conflicts, Vietnam Veterans and Korean War Veterans. A local contractor will pour the cement pad, which will also incorporate six memorial benches and multiple flag poles representing the Armed Forces. Engraved pavers will be sold - the price is yet to be determined - for the walkway leading to the monument.

The Bank of Monticello is accepting tax-deductible donations and donations can be mailed to Harold Babler, P.O. Box 145, Monticello, 53570.
