MONROE - The Monroe girls swimming team has tapered for the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional today.

"This is it," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "It's a one-shot deal."

The sectional champion in each race earns a state berth. The next 14 fastest times from the four Division 2 sectionals also qualify for state.

"My expectations for this swimming meet are no different than any other meet," Moser said. "I know they will give it 100 percent in the water. Hopefully, that 100 percent is enough for them to swim another week. If not, they know they have done their best for the season."

Monroe junior Rachel Root, who is a two-time state qualifier, will look to make a return trip. Root will look to qualify for state in the 100-yard backstroke and 100 butterfly.

The Baraboo sectional has the five fastest backstroke swimmers in the state. Root has a time under 1 minute.

"That's good because they will push each other," Moser said. "She's looking forward to it. I think she will qualify for state in both. I don't doubt what she will do in the pool."

The 14-team Baraboo sectional includes Milton, which is ranked No. 1 in Division 2 Wisconsin Swim Coaches Association poll, Madison Edgewood, Monona Grove, McFarland as well as Badger North powers DeForest and Sauk Prairie. DeForest is ranked No. 3 in the state.

"It's a slugfest meet," Moser said. "It's one of the best sectionals in the state."

Moser said the relay with the best shot of qualifying is the 200 medley relay team of Root, junior Sarah Kind, senior Cat Weeden and junior Briana Katzenberger.

"I wouldn't rule out the 200 or 400 freestyle relays," Moser said.

Moser said she realigned the relays to give swimmers a chance to be strong for their individual races and also to give the Cheesemakers a shot of qualifying another relay for state.

"We will see what happens," she said.

The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay will include Kind, Katzenberger, Weeden and Lizzy Dale. Kind will team up with Katzenberger, Angie Beaver and Root in the 400 freestyle relay.

After a short practice on Friday, the Cheesemakers assisted the Level 1 swimmers on the Green County Golden Gator YMCA swimming team with their kicks.

"That relieved any tension," Moser said. "It's all mental at this point. Physically, they have done everything they need to. It's 95 percent mental."
