MONROE - The Monroe High School boys tennis team is looking to build some momentum going into the Badger Conference tournament Friday.

Monroe junior Silas Setterstrom is looking to get back to .500 at No. 1 singles after defeating Portage's Andrew Smalley 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 9-10. It marked the lone win in the Cheesemakers' 6-1 dual match loss to the Warriors on Monday.

"Hopefully, by winning quite a few games collectively as a team we regained some confidence going into the conference tournament," Monroe coach Ashley Hermanson said.

Monroe drops to 0-11 overall and 0-5 in the Badger South. Monroe will host Madison Edgewood in its final regular-season match today.

Portage's Daniel Staveness at No. 2 singles defeated Monroe junior Ryan Peterson 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.

"Ryan Peterson got off to a good start in the first set, but things went downhill from there," Hermanson said.

At No. 3 singles, Portage's Jason Narel beat Monroe senior Ryan Stoneback 6-4, 6-1. Monroe's Quinn Walsh fell to Portage's Cody Santas 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

The Warriors' No. 1 doubles team of Carl Klein and Christian Morrin defeated Tanner Purdy and Quinn Sulejmani 6-2, 6-3. Portage's No. 2 doubles team of Sam Fritsch and Huey Griep knocked off Brett Lyne and Ben Dombkowski 6-0, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, Brett Owens and Tyler Wood beat Monroe's Zeke Frankford and Andrew Johnson 6-3, 6-1.
