FORT ATKINSON - Meet records and personal bests were just the start of what went on for the Monroe boys and girls track and field team on Friday in Fort Atkinson. With seven teams making the trip, the Cheesemakers had plenty of opportunities to measure their performances and progress throughout the season.
The boys squad finished fourth in team scoring with 224 points. Monona Grove (302 points), Fort Atkinson (293), and Whitewater (257) finished out the top three spots. In the 1,600-meters, senior standout Ethan Moehn finished with a time of 4 minutes, 16.45 seconds. Teammate Noah Tostrud finished second. With that time, Moehn broke the previous meet record by over a second, which stood for more than 40 years.
"His (Moehn) run was impressive," Cheesemakers coach Curt Miller said. "His performance is just a testament to him as an athlete. He is just as much of a student of the game as anyone I've ever been around in track and field. He takes pride in what he does and puts in the work and time."
Jake Hirsbrunner took top spots in the 800 (1:57.49) and high jump (6 feet). Both Hirsbrunner and Moehn helped the 1,600-meter relay team that included Tostrud and Evgeny Kondratev to a first-place finish with a time of 3:30.49.
The other first-place finish for the boys was senior Tervor Blum in the 3,200 (10:10.09). Seth Calaway (100), Dakota Phillips (400), and Grant Keith (pole vault), along with the 400- and 800-meter relay teams, each finished third in their respective events.
The girls squad finished fifth in team scoring. Monona Grove took the top spot with 350 points. Collecting a first-place finish in the pole vault was senior Tre Voegeli with a height of 9 feet, 9 inches.
"She looked really good in the vault," girls coach Doug Miller said. "We had her transition to a bigger pole, so to see her do that well was very nice."
The other first-place finish for the girls squad was the 400-meter relay team of Voegeli, Makayla Phillips, Abby Oudinot and MacKenzie Hesgard with a time of 54.21 seconds, good for their second best time of the year.
Freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner had second-place finishes in the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches) and 300-meter hurdles (49.54). With her performance in the high jump, Hirsbrunner set a Monroe freshman record in the event.
Josie Eberle (100) and Savannah Koester (high jump) each finished third in their respective events.
"Overall, I was very pleased with what we put out tonight," Doug Miller said of his squad. "I was happy with the events that we entered, and I thought we performed really well. Hopefully we can keep healthy as we progress through the season."
