Darlington, BH, Monticello-Albany lose postseason openers

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights saw their season come to a close in the opening round of the WIAA Division 3 playoffs June 10 at home with a 7-3 loss to Waterloo. New Glarus had beaten Waterloo in both previous matchups earlier in the season, including just three days earlier.

Waterloo opened the game with two runs in the top of the first and another in the third against Knights starter Kylo Barker. Barker then tossed a scoreless third, fourth and fifth innings. 

New Glarus broke the egg with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Carter Siegenthaler came on in relief for the Knights, allowing a run in the top of the sixth inning. New Glarus added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-3, but Waterloo scored three quick runs in the top of the seventh for insurance. Peyton Mendleski took over for Siegenthaler, and got out of the frame on five pitches. 

Cooper Dreyfus was 2-for-3 with a triple at the plate for New Glarus. Easton Dreyfus doubled and scored twice. Leyton Mihlbauer had three hits and two RBIs. Mendleski had a hit and an RBI. Darris Schuett was hit twice by pitches. 


Cuba City 6, Darlington 0

CUBA CITY — The Redbirds were one-hit in their June 10 D3 playoff loss to rival Cuba City.

Cubans pitcher Riley Richard tossed all seven innings and struck out 13 without issuing a walk. He gave up a single to Tye Crist and hit Braden Davis and Reagan Jackson with pitches. 

Darlington’s Gage Banfield tossed the first four frames, allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits and six walks. Cayden Rankin threw the final two scoreless innings for the Redbirds.

The best opportunity to score for the Redbirds against Richard came in the top of the third. Jackson was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning, but was picked off at first base before Richard threw a pitch. Crist then singled four pitches later, only to be picked off himself moments later. Banfield struck out to end the inning. 

Davis was hit by a pitch in the top of the seventh and went to second on an error with two outs, but Richard struck out Hunter Hardyman to end the game with three straight strikes on the next three pitches.


Argyle 12, Monticello-Albany 2

ARGYLE — The Orioles advanced to the regional semifinals with a convincing win over Monticello-Albany June 10 in the WIAA D4 playoffs.

Argyle led 3-2 after the first inning, and tacked on 3, 2, 1, and 3 runs to close out the game in five innings.

Jayden Johnson was 4-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs and a walk at the plate. Clay Ritschard had two hits, two walks and two runs. Brady Penniston had three RBIs and Max Godfrey singled and walked twice. Thomas Nelson also scored three runs in the 8-hole.

Clay Ritschard was just as dominant on the mound, holding the Ponies to just two hits, three walks and two hit batters in the complete game effort. He struck out 12, and just one of the two runs were earned.

Tyler Anderson was shelled in his two innings for the Ponies, allowing four walks, seven hits and eight runs (six earned). Carson Gafner tossed two innings in relief, giving up a run, and Andy Gertsch pitched to seven batters in the fifth, getting just one out.


Benton-Shullsburg 9, Black Hawk 1

SOUTH WAYNE — A 2-0 ballgame was turned on its head in the fifth inning as the Warriors were knocked out of the D5 playoffs June 10.

Benton-Shullsburg plated four runners in the top of the fifth to go up 6-0, then added three more runs over the next two frames. Black Hawk mustered up a single run in the bottom of the seventh.

Nathan Keleher struck out seven and allowed six hits, three walks and one unearned run in a complete game effort for Benton-Shullsburg. Dempsey Schliem tossed the first five for the Warriors. Five runs were earned. He allowed 10 hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Jexen Stietz tossed the sixth and seventh for Black Hawk.

Benton-Shullsburg travels to top-seeded Pecatonica June 15 for the regional semifinal.


Pecatonica 11, Barneveld 1

BLANCHARDVILLE — In the final game of the regular season June 10, Pecatonica dominated Barneveld to clinch the Six Rivers East title outright.

Barneveld scored its only run in the top of the first inning, but the Vikings countered with two runs of their own. Pecatonica added another run in the second, then plated three in the fourth and walked it off with a 5-run fifth inning.

Dakota Doescher was 4-for-4 with three doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored. Elijah Knutson and Kegun Brunker each had two hits. Knutson also walked. Hunter Enloe walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored three runs for Pecatonica. Brunker, Knutson, Bryce Johnsrud, Carson Kurschner and Tyler McKeon all doubled for Pecatonica.

Enloe pitched four innings, striking out nine and giving up four hits and two walks. Doescher pitched a clean fifth inning on just 10 pitches.
