MONROE — The milestones just keep coming for the Cheesemakers, who are in the middle of an 8-game win streak. Four days after longtime junior varsity boys basketball coach Dale Buvid collected his 1,000th career win between softball and basketball, senior Carson Leuzinger became the 10th player in program history to score 1,000 points.
Fellow senior JT Seagreaves, who is just 15 points away from the 1,000 milestone himself, also recently became the school’s all-time rebounding leader, surpassing Brad Stiner (1969-1971), who had 554 boards in 38 games (14.5).
Leuzinger’s scoring milestone came Jan. 8 during a 71-47 nonconference win over Milwaukee Bay View, which was two days after Monroe’s commanding 62-39 win against Mount Horeb in a Badger West contest. The win over Mount Horeb (6-3, 3-2 Badger West) on Jan. 6 gave Monroe (12-1, 6-0) yet another conference victory, and extended the Cheesemakers’ lead in the South Division by a full game. Monroe led 28-13 at halftime and extended that lead throughout the second half.
Seagreaves led Monroe in scoring with 23 points, including five 3-pointers, while Carson Leuzinger added 21 and Aaron Roidt had seven. The Cheesemakers shot 13-for-15 from the free throw line and hit 11 3s in all.
Two days later, Monroe knocked off Bay View in a nonconference game. The tight score disappeared midway through the first half and the Cheesemakers went up 22-13. Bay View got it back to within four points at 27-23, but Monroe closed the first stanza on a 10-0 run.
In fact, the Cheesemakers were just getting started. Over the course of the first 5:48 of the second half, Monroe ran off another 16 points in a row, making it a 26-0 run. Monroe’s largest lead of the game reached 37 points at 71-34 with 3:30 to play and the Cheesemakers reserves seeing court time. Bay View closed it out on a 13-2 run in the closing minutes.
Seagreaves finished with a career-high 28 points, while Leuzinger had 26 and four 3s. Charlie Wiegel chipped in with seven points. Seagreaves and Leuzinger are averaging more than 22 points per game this season.
Up next for Monroe is rival Edgewood on Jan. 11, with the Badger Conference Challenge following on Jan. 15. Waunakee (11-2, 6-0) leads the Badger East, with DeForest (8-3, 5-1) and Milton (10-2, 5-1) right behind. DeForest handed Monroe its only loss so far this season on Dec. 13, while the Cheesemakers beat Milton back on Nov. 30.

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds scored a pair of wins on Jan. 7 and 8.
In a rout of Iowa-Grant, Darlington jumped out to a 32-17 lead at halftime, and only grew it from there — out-scoring the Panthers by 25 in the second half.
Just one Iowa-Grant player was even able to reach double figures in scoring.
The next day, the Redbirds fended off Big Foot in a nonconference game. Hunter Hardyman led the way with 19 points, while Easton Evenstad added 12, Brady Long 10 and Will Murray 9.

Belleville 67, New Glarus 65
NEW GLARUS — The Wildcats picked up a stunning victory against their rival Glarner Knights on Jan. 7. Tied at 65 in the closing seconds, Belleville’s Carson Syse drove the lane and scored on a layup with two seconds left in regulation.
Syse finished the contest with a game-high 24 points, including 16 in the second half. Andrew Ace added 15 for Belleville, while Trevor Syse scored eight.
Dain Walter paced the Knights with 18 points, while Jack Parman netted 16, AC Strok 14 and Bryce Stampfli 13.
