BRODHEAD — The Brodhead-Juda Cardinals opened the 2018 season with a solid win over Evansville-Albany in Week One, 28-22.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 69-yard touchdown pass from Nick Naramore to Seth Allen.
The Blue Devils took a brief lead in the second quarter after Carson Hill scored on a run from 27 yards out and then quarterback Tyr Severson hit Sully Geske in the end zone for the two-point conversion, making it 8-7.
Brodhead-Juda scored again before halftime on a 15-yard run from Marco Bueno, but Quinten Kammerer’s run was unsuccessful, leaving the Cardinals ahead 13-8 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Jeffrey Williams scampered 59 yards to put the Cardinals up by two scores, with Naramore running in the two-point conversion to make it 21-8.
Evansville-Albany bounced right back, scoring on a 23-yard touchdown pass to Geske later in the third.
Williams broke off a 49-yard TD run in the fourth to again extend the advantage to two possessions for Brodhead-Juda. Severson and Geske would connect one last time for a 38-yard score late in the fourth.
Brodhead-Juda (1-0, 1-0 Rock Valley) hosts Clinton (0-1, 0-1) which lost 20-0 to East Troy in Week one. Evansville-Albany (0-1, 0-1) hosts Edgerton (0-1, 0-1), which fell to McFarland in a barnburner 57-34 in Week One.
New Glarus-Monticello 43, Dodgeville 0
DODGEVILLE — The Glarner Knights came out swinging their swords in Week One, led by field general Connor Siegenthaler’s 300 yards of offense and five touchdowns.
Siegenthaler, a junior, was 11 of 15 through the air for 226 yards and three touchdowns, good enough for a QB Passer Rating of 154.9. Siegenthaler also carried the ball 11 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns.
The Knights got going right away in the first quarter, when Siegenthaler connected with Josh Wieser for a 26-yard score. Six minutes later, Siegenthaler took it in himself from two yards out to make it 13-0 with 2:46 left in the first quarter.
Siegenthaler’s third score of the game came on a one-yard dash into the end zone with 5:42 left in the second quarter. Siegenthaler added a 27-yard TD strike to Darris Schuett with 2:09 left in the second and then went back to Schuett on a 20-yard strike with just 34 seconds left in the half to make it 33-0.
Robert Chenoweth made it 40-0 with a touchdown run in the third quarter and Trent Sigafus added a 31-yard field goal in the fourth to cap the scoring.
New Glarus-Monticello ended the night with 355 yards of offense. The Glarner Knights are back in action Friday at home against Lake Mills (0-1) in a Capitol Conference crossover game. The L-Cats lost to Division 2 Menomonie 33-7 in Week 1 at UW-Stout Stadium.
Darlington 34, Glenwood City 0
GALESVILLE — The Travis Winkers era kicked off with a win, as the Redbirds pulled out some nonconference success over Glenwood City Saturday.
Senior quarterback Blake Whalen finished 5 for 9 passing with 93 yards and two touchdowns, and added another 182 yards rushing on 16 carries with another score to lead the Redbirds. Kolbe Ubersox added 31 yards rushing on nine carries and had two touchdowns.
Darlington opened the scoring in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Whalen to sophomore Carter Lancaster from seven yards out.
Three more scores in the second quarter put the game away. First, it was Ubersox scoring from six yards out on a run, and then two minutes later adding a 2-yard touchdown. With 1:38 left in the half, Whalen dashed 14 yards to make it 28-0.
In the fourth quarter, Whalen hit Cayden Rankin on a 30-yard pass for the game’s final score.
Darlington hosts Lake Country Lutheran (1-0) in another nonconference game Friday. Lake Country Lutheran dominated Mineral Point in Week One 53-17.
Pecatonica-Argyle 34, Highland 6
PLATTEVILLE — The Vikings opened up the 2018 season with a big Six Rivers Conference win over Highland at the UW-Platteville Jamboree Saturday.
Pecatonica-Argyle scored twice in the second quarter to take a 12-0 lead into halftime, then added 10 points in the third and 12 more in the fourth to seal the win. Highland only reached the scoreboard in the fourth when the game was out of hand.
The Vikings (1-0, 1-0) travel to Ithaca (1-0) Friday for a Week 2 nonconference matchup. Ithaca defeated Cashton in its first game of the season 32-12.
