Brodhead suffers first lost, can clinch RVC with win

BRODHEAD — Although the Cardinals suffered their first loss of the 2024 season, they defeated the Crimson Tide on May 2. With the victory, Brodhead needs to win just one more conference game to clinch the title.


BRODHEAD 12, EDGERTON 0

EDGERTON — Allie Dahl’s three-run home run in the third lifted the Cardinals over the Tide in a Rock Valley Conference game on May 2. The sophomore finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and five RBIs.

Tessa Kloepping also had a big game, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Ava Risum and Tatum Ceslok recorded multiple hit games, Sophia Leitzen drove in two runs, and Jaelyn Hilliard walked three times.

Risum collected the win, giving up just two hits. She struck out eight in the team’s seventh shutout of the season.


BRODHEAD 4, JEFFERSON 3

JEFFERSON 3, BRODHEAD 1

JEFFERSON — Brodhead, ranked No. 1 in Division 3, and Jefferson, ranked No. 6 in Division 2, split a RVC crossover doubleheader on May 3. 

In the opener, the Cardinals scored all four runs in the top of the sixth. The first four batters of the inning reached, including Leah Rear. She knotted the game at two with a two-RBI double. She then came around to score the game-winning run on a groundout by Jerrica Schwartz.

Leitzen was the only Cardinal to record multiple hits. Risum picked up the win, giving up three earned runs on six hits. She struck out nine and walked three.

In the nightcap, Jefferson rallied in the sixth to score three runs. Leitzen was the spark atop the lineup, going 3-for-3. Risum, who pitched 1 1/3 innings, suffered the loss. She gave up three runs on five hits and struck out three.


MONROE 12, 

DELAVAN-DARIEN 1

DELAVAN — Sophie Golembiewski struck out 11 of 18 batters in a Rock Valley Conference win on May 2. She earned the win, giving up just one hit and one unearned run.

Brinley Roidt led the Cheesemakers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Chesney Slotten, Kaegann Paulson and Olivia Feller also recorded multiple-hit games. Golembiewski, Katrina Sathoff and Chyler Blackburn drew two walks each.


CLINTON 4, MONROE 3

CLINTON — The Cheesemakers’ late-game comeback effort fell short on May 3. Monroe scored two runs in the final two innings and out-hit Clinton 7-4. The difference was strikeouts, where the Cheesemakers went down 14 times on Ks.

Paulson and Alexis Herbst accounted for four of the team’s seven hits. Paulson suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs on four hits. She struck out seven and walked four.


MONTICELLO-NEW GLARUS 7, WISCONSIN HEIGHTS 2

MAZOMANIE —  The Ponies’ bats came alive in a nonconference game against the Vanguards on May 3, wracking up 12 hits.

Molly Olson went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. She also drew two walks, reaching base in all five plate appearances. On the season, Olson has a .655 OBP. Megan Peterson and Brooke Ryan drove in five runs of the team’s seven runs. Dalana Trumpy, Sadie Wilkins and Peterson also recorded multiple-hit games.

Tatum O’Bel picked up the win, giving up one earned run on three hits. She struck out two and walked two.

With the win, MNG improves to 4-8. The last time Monticello won four games was 2015, and the last time New Glarus won four games was 2017.


JUDA-ALBANY 11, 

POTOSI-CASSVILLE 0

POTOSI — Clean defense and 14 hits led to a Six Rivers crossover win for the Panthers on May 3.

Avary Briggs, Alana Durtschi, Myah Johnson and Emerson Briggs went a combined 9-for-15 with eight RBIs, six runs scored and two extra-base hits. Avary Briggs collected the win, giving up just three hits. She struck out five and didn’t issue a walk.


BELMONT 6, 

ARGYLE-BLACK HAWK 4

BELMONT — The Orioles scored four runs in the sixth, but their comeback effort fell short against the No. 5 Braves on May 2.

Brianna Wilhelmson drew a two-out walk, followed by back-to-back singles by Mya McNett and Kylie Butler. Maddy Lange then hit a three-run bomb to center. 

The sixth inning was the highlight of the game, as ABH struck out 17 times and tallied just three hits.

McNett suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs on six hits. She struck out four and walked three.


SOUTHWESTERN 2, DARLINGTON 1

DARLINGTON — The Wildcats took the lead in the top of the seventh, but the Redbirds were unable to respond for the loss on May 3.

Lilly Ritchie led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Sophie Wiegel suffered the loss, giving up two runs on 12 hits. She struck out nine and walked just one.


HIGHLAND 12, PECATONICA 3

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings completed a game against the Cardinals that was rained out in the third inning on April 11. Highland, ranked No. 8 in Division 5, started off hot with seven runs in the fourth leading to a Six Rivers crossover win on May 3.

Pecatonica managed six hits, but seven errors was its downfall. The top two hitters, Maddie Hirsch and Brooklyn Johnsrud, went a combined 4-for-6 with two RBIs. Diana Hendrickson suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs on seven hits. She struck out six and walked five.


RIVERDALE QUAD

PECATONICA 11, NEKOOSA 1

MUSCODA — The Vikings used a seven-run second to dispatch the Papermakers in their opening game of the Riverdale Quad on May 4.

Hirsch and Katelynn Jorenby recorded multiple-hit games, while Johnsrud and Sophia Schrapefer drove in two runs each. Bri Peterson picked up the win, giving up one unearned run  on three hits. She struck out one and didn’t issue a walk.


RIVERDALE 6, PECATONICA 0

MUSCODA — Peterson broke up Riverdale’s no-hit bid in Pecatonica’s second game of the quad. Diana Hendrickson and Tatum Kurschnher drew walks, and Alyssa Cassidy reached on an error as the only other base runners.

Hendrickson was charged with the loss, giving up four unearned runs on two hits. She struck out five and walked three.
