JANESVILLE — The battle for the Rock Valley-Rock Conference title went down to the wire at the league meet on May 15. Just three points separated Monroe and East Troy entering the event, and although the Cheesemakers fell to the Trojans by just one stroke, that 3-point lead was enough padding to win the conference title.

Four of the team’s top five golfers also earned all-conference recognition — Brock Brandli, Aaron Benzschawel and Brady Spotts received first team, and Brody Koehn made second team.

Monroe will host a WIAA Division 1 regional on May 21.

CAPITOL CONFERENCE MEET

OREGON — New Glarus, which entered the Capitol Conference meet with 25 points in fifth place, finished second with a team score of 346. Junior Lance Brecklin led the way with a 39, which was fifth overall. There were seven strokes between him and teammate Jack Leonard, who was the 5-seed.

“Lance Brecklin led our team with a strong outing, especially on the back 9 shooting a 39 and finishing with an 83,” New Glarus head coach Jonathan Goodness said. “I was really proud of how our guys stayed focused throughout their round and remembered how important each stroke is in a tournament — a lesson we learned last Wednesday at our invite.”

Despite their best performance of the season, New Glarus finished fourth in conference — just one stroke shy of second place. Lodi and Monticello-Belleville tied for second, with the tiebreaker going to Lodi.

Monticello-Belleville and New Glarus will begin regionals on May 21 at Evansville. The top four teams and top four individuals not on an advancing team qualify for sectionals. Last season, Josh Potter and Brett Warrell qualified for sectionals. They were only two and three strokes shy of the state tournament, respectively.
