Thomas Hyland, 87, of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, passed away on April 30, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer.
Tom was born to Michael and Leona Hyland in Monroe, Wisconsin, the fourth of 8 children. After graduating from Monroe High School in 1955, he went on to complete his undergraduate degree at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and then obtained a Master of Social Work degree from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. After graduation, he began his career in social work, culminating with his role as director of a children’s home in Superior, Wisconsin. Later, he would transition to managing a salmon processing operation in Alaska each summer for 20 years.
Tom was the most loving husband and father a family could ask for. He married the love of his life, Barbara Plancon, 61 years ago after meeting her on a blind date. Barb was the center of his universe, and he was devoted to her until the end. They had 8 children, of whom he was very proud and bragged about often.
He was a gentle soul who loved spending time with family, especially grandchildren, whom he babysat often. Tom also enjoyed making his famous banana bread, reading Vince Flynn books, playing football with his family on Thanksgiving and making trips to the casino, where he loved to listen to the music when he got a big win.
Tom was predeceased by his father, Michael, his mother, Leona, brothers Jim, Dick, and Mickey. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, children Michael, Lisa, Lynn, Patrick, Kevin, Ann, Diana, and Kelly, brothers Terry, Tim, and John, and sister Kathie.
