Terrace tree program now taking orders

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department have trees available for the Spring Terrace Tree Planting Program. All orders must be placed with the department by Friday, April 5 and flags should be staked by Monday, April 8.

Those who are interested in having a tree planted on the terrace but have overhead wires, the department has several varieties to choose from, including:

• Cleveland Select Pear is an ornamental pear. It is conical-shaped and one of the hardier Callery Pears. It has dark, glossy-green foliage and white flowers. The foliage turns a bright red and purple in the fall. The tree grows to about 25 to 30 feet high. The cost is $49 bare root.

• Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac is a budded tree form. The tree is a sturdy compact habit. The selection will flower at an early age. The white flower plumes are 10 to 12 inches long. A well-drained site is needed with no high nitrogen fertilizer. The tree grows to about 15 to 25 feet high. The cost is $49 bare root.

• Satisfaction Maple is a smaller scale maple with an impressive growth rate. Satisfaction Maple will get about 25 to 30 feet tall and slightly less in spread. It has a smaller, finer textured leaves. Green leaves color late in the season to a mix of purple, red-orange and green. Fall color is best when cool temperatures come on long and slow. The compact selection is for smaller landscapes or street tree planting. The tree grows to about 20 to 25 feet high. The cost is $39 bare root.

Those who are interested in having a tree planted on the terrace in areas that do not have any overhead wires, the department has several varieties of trees to choose from, including:

• Sienna Glen Maple is a hybrid maple with distinct, upright pyramidal growth habit which is readily apparent as a young tree, and becomes a broad pyramid when mature. The tree exhibits vigorous growth. The branches are borne closer together, finer and more delicate. The wood is harder, stouter and exhibits less drooping. The smaller, finer texture dark-green leaves have a silvery underside. Fall color is a mix of yellow, orange and red. The tree grows to about 50 to 60 feet high. The cost is $49 bare root.

• Emerald Lustre Maple is similar to the Emerald Queen, but more vigorous and a better branching habit. Glossy, green foliage with red tips on new growth and then turns yellow in the fall. The tree grows to about 50 to 60 feet high. The cost is $39 bare root.

• Skyline Honey Locust is the most popular of the honey locust. It's upright, spreading branch angles give it a distinctive pyramidal form and develops a strong sturdy trunk. The tree is excellent for the use when filtered shade is desired. The foliage turns yellow in the fall. The tree is seedless. The tree grows to about 45 feet high. The cost is $49 bare root.

• White Oak is a rugged oak and grows well in either upland or swampy areas. The leaves are dark-green above and felty-white underneath, changing to yellow-brown to reddish in the fall. The tree grows to about 50 feet high. The cost is $92 in a container.

• Burgundy Belle has symmetrical branching. The dark green foliage turns to an outstanding fall color of brilliant red then changes to an intense burgundy as it ages. The tree is smaller in stature and quite rounded, and it grows to about 45 feet high. The cost is $49 bare root.

When trees are paid, the department will give tree owners a flag to be placed in the general area they would prefer the tree be planted. Digger's Hotline will be called the week of April 8 and planting is scheduled to begin the week of April 22.
