SOUTH WAYNE — A Lafayette County family was left temporarily homeless after an overnight fire incident on Sunday, Dec. 8 caused some smoke damage.

According to South Wayne Fire Chief Steve Lehman, the incident on McKnight Street had plenty of smoke but few visible flames.

“There was no fire but a lot of smoke when we got there,” Lehman said. “It looks like it started in the basement.”

He said the fire was likely electrical in nature and power was cut off to the home as a precaution. The house was also ventilated for the family, which was forced to stay elsewhere for the night.

An electrician was on scene Monday to repair the damage so Alliant Energy could restore the power and get the large family back into their home.

“We are all physically okay, thank you to who came to the call of the duty,” an adult occupant of the home said on social media after the incident.

Assisting on the emergency call was Browntown Fire Department, which was activated with an engine during the incident as a precaution, according to Lehman.
