Robert Copeland Back in custody Thursday
MONROE - Almost 24 hours after he walked away while on Huber release, Green County Jail inmate Robert Copeland, 37, was arrested Thursday.

Using information from an investigation that began immediately following his escape Wednesday, police arrested Copeland at 1:40 p.m. in the W4200 block of Highway 11/81, Lt. Paul Weichbrod said.

Police along with the Green County Sheriff's deputies had determined Copeland was staying in that part of Monroe and placed officers in the area, he said.

"We knew an approximate area and put people in the area and stopped the vehicle and got him," Weichbrod said.

After arresting and searching Copeland, police found drug paraphernalia.

Since Copeland had a previous drug conviction, his possession charge now is a criminal offense, in addition to the escape charge he already was likely to face.

Escape is a class H felony, which carries a penalty of six years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.

At about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Copeland walked away while out of the Green County Jail, which having Huber privileges allows. Copeland was serving a misdemeanor child support commitment.

Copeland was the fifth inmate in the past 12 months to walk away from custody while out of the jail on Huber release.

Prior to Copeland, Matthew D. Schupbach, 25, Brodhead, walked away after a job interview July 13, but later was apprehended in Illinois. Johnnie N. Phiffer, 41, walked away from Monroe Clinic June 12 after a medical appointment. He turned himself in at the Dane County Sheriff's Department a few days later. In May, Luis Miranda walked away from custody after he went to the career center at Pleasant View. He was taken into custody in Minnesota in June. In October 2008, Nichole Abaunza walked away from custody and returned five days later.
