'Christmas Carol' takes to airwaves

MONROE - The Monroe Arts Center, in cooperation with the Monroe Theatre Guild and Big Radio, presents an evening of entertainment from the golden age of radio with, "A Christmas Carol Radio Show."

WEKZ/Big Radio will broadcast "A Christmas Carol" on FM 93.7 at 1 p.m. and at 9 p.m., AM 1260 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and AM 1570 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 24 and Saturday, Dec. 25.

John Baumann, Monroe, plays the lead role of Scrooge. Supporting roles include Dan Blum as Bob Cratchit, Jean Adler as Mrs. Cratchit, Christopher Page as Tiny Tim, and Todd Lorenz as Marley.

"Watching the true actor in us all as it was coaxed out was a real treat," Blum said. It was quite unique to work in a play and only act with a handful. It was an experience I am so glad I signed up for."

The show also features: Michael Boyce, George Braedon, Earl Brockman, Patt Carter, Paul Casler, Melissa DiTielio, Morgan Franson, Steve Franson, Mary Friedrichs, Jillian Heidenrich, Bridget Kelly, Mary Kelly, Judy Knudtson, Rick Maliszewski, Duncan Thomas McGonagle, Jim McNeill, Anna Meritt, Sheri Novak, Jane Olson, Benjamin Page, Jameson Page, Teresa Page, John Peterson, Patra Smith, Ron Spielman, John Waelti, and Ryan Wilson.

Richard Hilger adapted and directed the radio play. Patrick Bodell, of Sound Lab Studios of Monroe, produced the recording and adapted the music, and Bell Choir of Juda Zion United Methodist Church contributed to the production.

Hilger's professional theater career has spanned more than 25 years, working in 36 of the 50 states and in Canada including Toronto, Halifax, and Winnipeg. He is a former principal at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, playing Bob Cratchit and Scrooge, among numerous other roles, and appeared in several productions at Chanhassen Dinner Theater and The Cricket Theater in greater Minneapolis. He played four seasons at Meadowbrook Theater in Rochester, Mich., and toured the western states in Generation, and the east coast as Ben Franklin in "1776." He also played Dylan Thomas in Sydney Michael's "Dylan at The Cricket," toured a one-man show of Dylan in Britain, and in Dylan's hometown of Laugharne, Wales, and on BBC-Wales. He taught acting, directing, Shakespeare, playwrighting, reader's theater, and theater history for 10 years at Ripon College.
