Monroe Optimist No. 1 edges Orangeville

MONROE - Run scoring doubles by Sarah Alexander, Alyssa Montgomery and Kasey Gutzmer highlighted Monroe Optimists No. 1's win over Orangeville in Monroe Fastpitch action on Sunday.

Monroe scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a 7-6 deficit and then hung on for the 9-8 win. Becca Armstrong, Alexander and Gutzmer each collected two hits to pace Monroe's 12-hit attack. Armstrong struck out 10 to pick up the win on the mound.

In other Red League games, Orfordville defeated Monticello 10-5 and Monticello beat Argyle 8-7.

In White League action, Pecatonica scored five runs in the sixth to overcome a 9-6 deficit to defeat Monroe Optimists No. 2 11-9. Corey Wells struck out 12, but took the loss for Monroe. Amanda Putz and Michaela Geiken each collected two hits to lead Monroe on offense.
