MG topples Monroe

MONONA - Monroe High School junior Silas Setterstrom dropped a three-setter to Monona Grove at No. 1 singles Thursday in one of the best tennis matches of a Badger Conference dual.

Monona Grove's Cole Lindwelk defeated Setterstrom 6-3, 6-7 (13), 6-1.

The Silver Eagles knocked off the Cheesemakers 7-0 in the dual match.

"Monona Grove has some decent players and strong hitters," Monroe coach Ashley Hermanson said. "They were by far the better team of the match.

"Setterstrom gave his match his all tonight. This was one of Setterstrom's better matches this season. He played with a lot of patience and perseverance. He should go into the conference tournament with lots of confidence after tonight."

The conference tournament is May 20 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

At No. 2 singles Thursday, Monona Grove's Max Nelson defeated Monroe junior Ryan Peterson 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3, Caden Nelson beat Monroe sophomore Quinn Sulejmani 6-0, 6-1. At No. 4, Monona Grove's Ben Travis defeated Monroe senior Ryan Stoneback 6-0, 6-2.

The Silver Eagles' No. 1 doubles team of Luke Nelson and Andrew Zhou beat the Cheesemakers' Kody Althaus and Tanner Purdy 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Monona Grove's Kyle Thomas and Kevin Guenthner beat Monroe's Ben Dombkowski and Brett Lyne 6-1, 6-0. The Silver Eagles' No. 3 team of Bennett Wessley and Carlos Torrado defeated Monroe's Andrew Johnson and Zeke Frankford 6-3, 6-0.
