WAUKESHA — Four Monroe-New Glarus swimming events competed at the WIAA Division 1 state meet on Saturday, Nov. 16. Although many of the athletes that participated had previous state experience, only one improved upon their time.

Sophomore Hadleigh Shunk came into the 100-meter backstroke with a 59.68 time and shaved it down to 59.39. She finished 21st of 24 swimmers in the event.

The other individual event was Megan Chapman in the  500-yard freestyle. She was two seconds slower than her seed time, finishing in 5:19.34. Last year at state, Chapman recorded a 5:09.45 for tenth place.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team — comprised of Chapmen, Delaney Lynch, Kaia Morrison and Anna Zentner — finished in 1:42.15. MNG was last of 24 relays. With a disqualification of the Madison West 400-yard freestyle relay, MNG’s team of Lynch, Morrison, Shunk and Chapman finished 23rd of 23 with a time of 3:43.

Middleton claimed its second straight Division 1 girls swimming and diving title with 334 points. Runners-up Verona tallied 211 points.
