BRODHEAD — Despite record temperatures for August, Brodhead-Juda and Pecatonica-Argyle cross country teams opened their seasons on Saturday, Aug. 26.
The Cardinals hosted Evansville and Holy Family, where Evansville won both boys and girls races with top runners Dillon Elliott and Jer’Novia Hermanson.
Brodhead-Juda boys compiled 44 points for third, led by Gavin Pinnow and Nathan Engen. The pair finished fifth and sixth, followed by Gauge Jorgenson and Jorge Villalva in ninth and tenth. Hunter Jorgenson rounded out the five scorers, taking 14th.
For the girls, the Cardinals tallied 29 points for second. Kalena Riemer and Madilyn Arnold finished third and fourth, followed by Madi Brown and Serena Santiago in sixth and seventh. Danica Demrow was the fifth runner in 13th. Holy Family did not have enough runners for a team score.
At Iowa-Grant, Pecatonica-Argyle faced adversity as the boys finished six of seven teams (155 points) while the girls didn’t have enough runners for a team score.
Jakob Orloff and Grant Kuberski paced the Vikings, finishing 26th and 27th. The final three scorers finished in a group at 33rd, 34th and 35th — all within nine seconds of each other. For the girls, Mazie Theorin, Sophie Howard and Aleah Harris ran in a pack, finishing within 12 seconds of each other in 27th, 29th and 31st, respectively.
