DELAVAN - The Monroe boys soccer team was no match for defending Division 3 state champion Delavan-Darien as the Comets rolled to an 8-1 win over the Cheesemakers on Tuesday.
Delavan-Darien, ranked No. 1 in the Division 3 state poll, got two goals from Kenneth Velez and Trgrio Huerta to knock off the Cheesemakers. The only time Monroe (3-2-1) would see Delavan-Darien again is if the Cheesemakers make a run to the state championship game.
"Going into the game everyone knew Delavan-Darien was a really strong team," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "I wanted them to see the best to see where we stand."
Monroe senior Niven Tomasiewicz scored a goal on an assist from junior Ryne Miller to tie the game at 1 at 26 minutes, 30 seconds.
The Comets erupted, scoring five goals in the second half.
"They kept the pressure on us," Vasquez said. "They kept coming. They didn't hold back. There is not a weak spot in their whole team."
Monroe hosts Sugar River at 5 p.m. Thursday at Honey Creek Park.
"It's a big game for us because we are in the same regional," Vasquez said.
