REEDSBURG - The Monroe wrestling team kicked off the season with a fourth-place finish at the Reedsburg Duals Saturday.
Monroe defeated Racine Horlick 39-31 and then lost to Weston-Ithaca 63-18. The Cheesemakers then dropped a match to Sparta 56-11 and lost to Lancaster 54-19.
"We didn't wrestle our best," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "We weren't aggressive and we laid back."
After sitting around for three hours - Westby didn't make the dual tournament because of ice - the Cheesemakers knocked off Racine Horlick.
"I don't want to use that as an excuse," Jackson said of the three hours the Cheesemakers waited to wrestle. "I don't know what the issue was. We didn't wrestle very aggressive."
Monroe junior Trevor Gorr at 220 pounds finished 3-1 at the tournament.
"He wrestled O.K.," Jackson said of Gorr. "I'm sure he would tell you he didn't wrestle very aggressive. He made a lot of matches closer than they needed to be."
Monroe junior Aaron Hesgard at 132 pounds, junior Kevin Klopfenstein (138), junior Dusty Burkhalter (195) and sophomore Ryan Hughes (160) each finished 2-2.
Jackson looks forward to starting out the season with a dual tournament.
"It gives them a lot of mat time," he said. "Everyone gets five matches unless there is a forfeit."
Jackson said Hesgard and Klopfenstein wrestled up a weight class against Racine Horlick so they could get matches.
"Maybe it was a sign that we need to work harder and I need to push them harder in practice," Jackson said of the fourth-place finish as a team.
Monroe wrestles its first Badger South Conference dual match at Oregon on Tuesday.
"We still have some young guys who have to get down to their weights," he said.
