Don taught land survey in Germany and was honored to be promoted to staff sergeant in a short period of time. He married Helen Mathys on July 1, 1952. Don was a cheesemaker before he and Helen farmed in the Monroe area for many years. Don was proud to be recognized for soil erosion control on his cropland in the 1970's. He was especially proud of his Moe-Vale registered Holstein herd. In the mid-1980's, Don transitioned into the insurance business. He was manager of Green County Mutual Insurance Company, in addition to serving on the State Board of mutual companies for six years. He was an active member of St. Victor's Catholic Church in Monroe for many years. When Don and Helen relocated to Reedsburg, WI in 2011 to be closer to family, they were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Don and Helen enjoyed bowling, square dancing, and playing cards. In retirement, he stayed active golfing, playing cards, and having coffee with friends. Don was quick to make new friends and eager to debate differing viewpoints. He was an avid reader of history and current events. Don was a great supporter of his children. He provided loving guidance without judgement all through their adult lives. Don loved attending his grandchildren's events from baseball games to dance recitals. Over their 71 years of marriage, he and Helen traveled extensively visiting their adult children and grandchildren from coast to coast. They also enjoyed several golf trips with friends and an Alaskan cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary.

Don was predeceased by his parents, and his brothers, Roger and Jim.
