MONROE - David M. Mosher, owner of the Dave Mosher and Associates Insurance Company in Monroe, received the Richard B. Schmied Leadership Award for 2010, presented by the Green County Development Corporation (GCDC) last night in Monroe.

Mosher was chosen to receive the award for his untiring promotion of the Green County community, his tireless efforts on behalf of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, his work as president of the New Glarus Chamber of Commerce and his many other activities in and for the Green County community.

Anna Schramke, executive director of GCDC, noted that economic development is closely tied to improvement of the lives of all people.

"Richard Schmied never lost sight of the small but vitally important touches that teach, reinforce, ennoble, enable and elevate people. The recipient of the 2010 RBS Leadership Award personifies this," Schramke said.

The GCDC annual meeting and recognition dinner, held at the Monroe Country Club this year, recognizes outstanding community and business leaders who have had an impact on the economic health of the county.

Orchid Monroe LLC was awarded Outstanding Business of the Year for 2010. Orchid was recognized for its commitment to the area and to green technology and for the forward momentum in strategic product production and manufacturing partnerships, which the company has put into place over the past year. Keith Cornacchia, Orchid's vice president of business development, accepted the award for the company and reiterated Orchid's commitment to Green County and green technology.

Bill and Roz Gausman and Bert and Trish Paris, founders of Edelweiss Graziers Cooperative, received the 2010 Entrepreneurial Spirit Award.

This award is presented to an entrepreneurial firm interested in fast growth and focus on innovation, and whose owners have the characteristics of creativity, integrity and a commitment to economic growth in Green County.

In June 2006, Edelweiss Graziers Cooperative was born as a grass-based dairy cooperative that would provide quality, grass-based milk to Master Cheesemaker, Bruce Workman, Edelweiss Creamery.

Bruce and his staff create quality grass-based cheeses marketed by Jeff Wideman and Shirley Knox, Maple Leaf Cheese. Today the cooperative is made up of five family farms: Bert and Trish Paris, Bill and Roz Gausman, Tim Pauli, Jamie and Deanne Holmstrom and Cory and Carrie Brekkan.

The cooperative maintains strict standards for grazing, feeding and health care for its milk cows.

"You can taste the difference in the cheese," Paris said.

The Community Spirit Award was presented to the Key Ingredients Committee in the City of Brodhead, for securing and hosting the Smithsonian's Key Ingredient Exhibit.

The exhibit will be open to the public May 6 through June 17 at the Brodhead Memorial Library, and with the help of Green County Tourism Director Noreen Rueckert, will have a local spin to make it even more fun for locals and visitors.

"The dedication of this team of citizens and their forward visioning to realize that Brodhead could and should secure this exhibit is an inspiration to us all," Schramke said.

The 2010 Annual Meeting and Recognition Dinner focused on creating balance in the midst of an unbalanced world. Anita Matcha, Profit Enhancement Solutions, closed the program by challenging attendees to look at their lives in a focused way. She talked about how the 80-20 Rule can be applied to work and home life to create a fuller, more balanced balance sheet.

"That is what we want for this county," Schramke said. "We want companies that can balance their approach and respond positively in the face of challenging circumstances that we see coming our way every day. Green County's future lies in the hands of our businesses and we want them to thrive."

The Green County Development Corporation (GCDC), a multi-jurisdictional economic development corporation, was formed to bring professional economic development expertise to its member communities to create a competitive advantage to spur job creation and new investments.

The organization leverages the resources of the county and its municipalities to ensure economic health and success of Green County communities and businesses.
