Return our democracy
Letter To The Editor

By William Holland

Monroe

To the Editor:

Communities and churches across Wisconsin are standing up to defend democracy from the corrupting effects of undue corporate power by working with Wisconsin United to Amend, to amend the United States Constitution to clarify that:

1. Only human beings are endowed with constitutional rights-not corporations, unions, nonprofits or other artificial entities, and

2. Money is not speech, and therefore limiting political contributions and spending is not equal to limiting speech

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is active in this movement. They are encouraging congregations to send a resolution to their local synod, asking the synod to request the ELCA Church to pass a resolution calling for the amendment, and calling on all Church congregations and synods to pass resolutions of support.

The ELCA asks that individuals and congregations work together with our state and federal legislators to get a constitutional amendment passed to limit money in politics.

WIUTA is working with local ELCA churches to gather support for this effort.  Grace Lutheran Church, and its Church Council have passed a Resolution of Support, which is being forwarded to the South Central Synod of the Wisconsin.  Any other ELCA churches in this area can call 734-735-3475 to get the process started.

Churches of other denominations are encouraged to join this movement by contacting George Penn at georgepenn51@gmail.com or 608-244-6436.

Together We Can Fix This!
