William "Bill" Hartwig, age 92, of Monroe, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the Monroe Clinic Hospice Home. He was born on September 30, 1925, the son of George and Ella (Kundert) Hartwig. He grew up on the family farm and attended country schools.
Bill & Marilyn J (Hasse) were united in marriage on June 25, 1950 at St. John's United Church of Christ, Monroe.
Bill was a dedicated farmer and conservationist. He was honored to take over the Hasse family farm. He & Marilyn worked side by side on the farm and enjoyed going to dances, especially Turner Hall, as his band, "Billy Hartwig & the Jolly Switzers" played for many wedding dances there and around the area.
After retiring from the farm, Bill was a driver for Monroe Truck Equipment for 20 years. He served for many years on the Town of Monroe Board and as Town of Monroe Treasurer. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Monroe Moose Lodge #754, and various farm organizations. He was a dedicated blood donor. In his younger years, Bill enjoyed playing the accordion with his band, playing ball, bowling and was always up for a euchre game.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn; son Kim (Sue), daughter Wendy (Will) Pick, Grandchildren Nick Hartwig and Angela (JJ) McLean; great-grandchildren Meadow, Tripp, Tadhg. He is further survived by a brother-in-law, Herman Blum; sister-in-law Glenda Endrulat; and special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold (Bertha), Lee (Arlene), twin brother Bob (Betty); a sister Mildred Blum; brother-in-law William Endrulat; and a sister-in-law, Gerri Rufer.
The family is very grateful Bill spent one of his last days eating a favorite breakfast of crepes followed by an afternoon at the Junction House enjoying the Junction Jammers, and a treat of ice cream to end the day.
