NEW GLARUS, WI - Merton O. Colney, age 90, passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on April 13, 1922 in Basco, WI to his parents Orville and Hilda (Zweifel) Colney. Mert graduated from the Paoli Grade School in 1936 and Mt. Horeb High School in 1940. On February 12, 1946 he was united in marriage to Olga Lienhardt at the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus. Mert operated the Merton Colney Insurance Agency in New Glarus for many years. He was a member of the Swiss United Church of Christ and former member of the consistory, Past Master of the New Glarus Masonic Lodge #310, Past High Priest of the New Glarus Chapter R.A.M, and a charter member of the Edelweiss Chalet Country Club. Mert also served on the New Glarus School District Board for nine years, guided for eleven years at the Swiss Historical Village, and was a leader for many years with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Mert is survived by his three children James Colney of Jacksonville, FL, Marsha (Stan) Bornstein of Ipswich, MA, and Mike (Theresa) Colney of New Glarus, WI, four grandchildren Maxwell (Lauren) Colney of Land O' Lakes, FL, Christopher Colney of New Glarus, WI, Benjamin Colney of New Glarus, and Hannah Colney of New Glarus, two sisters Mary Lou Kollath of Verona, WI and Gretchen Baker of Austin, TX.

He was preceded in death by his wife Olga, parents, sister Grace, and brothers Walter and Earl.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at the New Glarus Home Chapel, 600 2nd Ave., New Glarus, WI, access from Elm Dr. The Rev. Craig Jan-McMahon will officiate along with the Rev. Kenneth Klink, burial will follow in the Swiss Church Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the New Glarus Home Chapel, access from Elm Dr. A Masonic Memorial service will be held at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday during the visitation.

The Zentner-Beal Funeral Home of New Glarus is serving the family.

The family thanks Pastor Craig of Swiss UCC for his spiritual care; the staff of the Monroe Clinic Hospice for their compassionate care; and the staff of the New Glarus Home who gave Mert such outstanding care and limitless kindness and attention.
