Leon C. Gempeler, age 90, of Monticello, passed away on Saturday August 25, 2012. He was born on August 3, 1922 in Washington Township on the home farm, the son of Edward and Flora (Rufer) Gempeler. He attended the Loveland Country School. Leon married his wife of 67 years, Margaret E. Stricker on February 25, 1945 at St. John's United Church of Christ. Leon and Margaret farmed on the home farm the greater part of their life. Leon also worked at the Equity Sales Barn and at Monroe Truck. He was a member of the Zwingli United Church of Christ and the Zwingli Church Consistory, the New Glarus Eagles Club, Pure Milk Association, and Add A Million Club of Monroe. In 1967, Leon was awarded the Green County Outstanding Conservation Farmer Award. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, traveling in his camper, but most of all he loved spending time with his family, friends, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret E. Gempeler of Monroe; children, Roger Gempeler of Monticello, RoxAnn Witkowski of Hilton Head Island SC, Ron Gempeler (Betsy Treuthardt) of Brodhead, Rick (Deb) Gempeler of Beaver Dam, Reyne (Stacey) Phillips of Browntown; grandchildren, Mary Foley of Hilton Head Island, SC, Adrian Phillips of Rockford, IL, Ashley Brewster of Monroe, Ed (Jaime Griesbaum) Tetzlaff of Oshkosh, Carrie (Jon Hulse) Tetzlaff of Champlin, MN; great-grandchildren, Braeden Brewster, Memphis Brewster both of Monroe. Abbey, Johnny, and Lilly Tetzlaff of Oshkosh; sister-in-law, Helen Schmidt; and brother-in-law, Harold Neuenschwander both of Monroe. He is predeceased by his parents, brother, Harvey Gempeler, sisters-in-law, Ruth Gempeler and Patricia Berra.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery in Monticello. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home in Monroe.
