BELLEVILLE - The Sugar River boys soccer team moved one step closer to winning the Capitol Conference championship after shutting out Lodi 3-0 Monday.
With the win, Sugar River improves to 9-3-1, 4-0-1 Capitol Conference. The Raiders are just ahead of Lakeside Lutheran (3-0-1) and Watertown Luther Prep (4-1). Sugar River controls its own destiny after beating Watertown Luther Prep 10-0 earlier this year and tying Lakeside Lutheran.
After a scoreless first half, Sugar River scored three goals in the second half. Sugar River senior Kevin Zimmerman scored a goal at 59 minutes, 30 seconds to give the Raiders the lead. Senior teammate Nehemiah Noriega scored a goal about one minute later to extend the Raiders' lead to 2-0.
Sugar River's Noah Leonard capped the scoring by punching in a goal on an assist from senior Dylan Hustad at 62:31.
