Pec topples Pointers in opener

BLANCHARDVILLE - The hitting and pitching prowess of senior Brooks Chandler helped carry the Pecatonica High School baseball team to a season-opening 9-1 win over Mineral Point on Tuesday.

Chandler went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. He also pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Chandler was one of four pitchers who combined on a one-hitter.

"We wanted to get some pitchers some work," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "It was a good opening-day win for us."

Pecatonica was missing three starters, including junior Dakota Conwell (pulled leg muscle) and junior Logan Green (shoulder injury). A third player was facing a suspension.

"We got contributions from everybody," Strommen said. "Some roles are bigger than others, but they are all important."

Pecatonica junior Jake Dearth went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Junior A.J. Hendrickson started on the mound and pitched three shutout innings. He struck out five and walked two. Senior Riley Gould pitched one inning and gave up one unearned run. Junior Jarrett Carlson tossed two shutout innings in relief.

Pecatonica will play at New Glarus on Thursday.

In other action, Argyle defeated Brodhead-Juda 10-3. Argyle senior Riley Ostby pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run on five hits. he struck out 10 and walked four.

Brodhead-Juda's Skyler STuckey and Tyler Flannery were each 2-for-3 for the Cardinals.

Argley's Cam Treuthardt had a double.
