MONROE - Sugar River senior Vanessa Narveson scored the game-winning goal on a header off a corner kick from teammate Aimee Sies to give the Raiders a thrilling 2-1 win over the Monroe girls soccer team Saturday at Honey Creek Park.

With the win, Sugar River (16-2-2), ranked No. 3 in the WisSports.net Division 3 coaches' poll, improved to 16-2-2. The Raiders are one game behind Lodi in the Capitol Conference with one league game left. Sugar River will play its final conference game against Cambridge-Deerfield on Thursday and Lodi will play Lake Mills the same day.

With the loss, Monroe drops to 9-5-4, 0-3-2 Badger South.

Sies helped Sugar River take a 1-0 lead after she scored the first goal on a corner kick in the 9th minute.

Monroe senior Maddie Kallgren scored the game-tying goal on a penalty kick for a hand ball call in the box. It was a defensive battle after that. Monroe freshman goalie Anna Latimer had four saves in the first half, but left the game due to the effects of a concussion she suffered earlier in the week.

Monroe sophomore Reily Pond served as the goalkeeper in the second half and had eight saves.

Narveson's game-winning header goal came in the 86th minute.

Monroe hosts Big Foot at 5 p.m. today.
